Answer

There are two methods to citing a California state law.  The following examples are from the CSU Stanislaus resource APA - Citing Legal Resources.

Citing the State Code (preferred method)

Name of law (if available), State Abbreviation Code Abbreviation § section number(s) (Year if available).

Example:

Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act, Cal. Penal Code § 11164 et seq.

Citing a Bill or Chapter Number

Name of law, State Legislative Chamber Abbreviation (i.e. Assemb. or S.) Bill number, Chapter number (Cal. Stat. Year).

Example:

California Fostering Connections to Success Act, Cal. Assemb. B. 12 (2010-2011), Chapter 559 (Cal. Stat. 2010).
